Mr. Bob Sullivan is a veteran journalist and the author of four books, including the 2008 New York Times Best-Seller, Gotcha Capitalism, and the 2010 New York Times Best Seller, Stop Getting Ripped Off! He has won the Society of Professional Journalists prestigious Public Service award, a Peabody award, and been given Consumer Federation of America’s Service Award.
He worked for MSNBC.com/NBC News for nearly 20 years, much of them creating and writing the popular consumer/tech blog The Red Tape Chronicles. Bob was the first to tell the world about the FBI’s secret Magic Lantern encryption key-stealing software in the wake of 9/11, and broke the ChoicePoint data leak story, the first of what would become an avalanche of stories about stolen and lost personal information.
Now an independent journalist, he is still a contributor on CNBC.com and NBCNews.com, and continues to appear on NBC Nightly News and the TODAY show as a consumer and technology expert. He runs a tech and consumer news service at BobSullivan.net; stories there are syndicated to dozens of news services, including ABC, CBS, Fox, Yahoo, Marketwatch, and Credit.com.
An expert in scams, consumer behavior, deception, and identity theft, Bob is also a sought-after speaker, delivering keynotes at dozens of conferences in the U.S. and Europe, including RSA, the Department of Justice’s National Advocacy Center, and Carnegie Mellon’s CyLab.
He is also on the board of advisers at the University of Georgia’s Cox Institute for Journalism Innovation.
Mr. Sullivan received his B.A. in history and mathematics from Fairfield University. He received his M.A. in Journalism from the Missouri School of Journalism.
